Each year, DSCC presents the Outstanding Alumni Award to nominated individuals who have excelled in their field, given back to the community, and served as positive role models. Vice President of External Affairs, Dr. Amanda Walker, recognized Mrs. Carol Armstrong as the Fall 2024 Outstanding Alumna at the Boots and Bow Ties Event on November 9.
Mrs. Armstrong graduated from Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC) in May 1985, earning an Associate of Science in Business. This achievement marked the beginning of a fulfilling professional journey.
Mrs. Armstrong began her career as a data entry clerk at Heckethorn Manufacturing in Dyersburg, TN, where she gained valuable experience in the manufacturing sector. From 1974 to 1982, she and her husband, Cecil Armstrong, owned and operated Cecil Leadway Grocery Store in Friendship, TN, allowing her to refine her skills in various aspects of the business world. After a brief break, she returned to the workforce as a sales clerk at Ermco in Dyersburg, where she interacted with customers and further developed her sales expertise.
During her studies at DSCC, Mrs. Armstrong participated in the Applied Office Procedures program, which provided her with practical experience while she pursued her education. Ms. Sandra Rockett, Director of Financial Aid, greatly influenced the internship program and encouraged her to work at Ermco.
When reflecting on her experience at DSCC, Carol said, “I enjoyed the small, engaging classes.” She especially appreciated the quality of the teaching staff, which motivated her to excel academically, leading her to graduate as the second highest in her class. Ms. Emma Reynolds served as her advisor, and along with Ms. Sandra Rockett, they helped Mrs. Armstrong complete her studies at DSCC and enter back into the workforce.
Today, Mrs. Armstrong and her husband, Cecil Armstrong, enjoy their retirement but remain active in their community. She is a dedicated member of Christ Fellowship Baptist Church in Dyersburg, where she contributes her time and energy to the Community Bible Study group. Additionally, she participates in exercise programs organized by the Department of Aging, focusing on maintaining her health and well-being.
Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong reside in Dyersburg, where they take pride in their close-knit family. They are the proud parents of three adult children, Jane Ogg, Greg Armstrong, and Cathy Hollingsworth, who have all pursued their paths in life. She also has five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
