Dyersburg State Community College’s Jimmy Naifeh Center is honored to announce an exhibit showcasing the artwork of Mid-South Veterans on display from October 3 through December 2, 2024. This one-of-a-kind collection celebrates the creativity of three talented veterans: James Bomes, George Gillard, and Ernest Lawson.

The community is warmly invited to an artists’ reception on Monday, November 18, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., where they can meet and celebrate these distinguished artists and learn about their journeys from active-duty service members to accomplished artists. Refreshments will be served during the reception.

The exhibit, made possible through the collaboration of the Jimmy Naifeh Center and the Tipton Art League, features diverse artwork that reflects each artist’s vision. Each artist has also provided insights into their experiences and inspirations drawn from military service.

  • James Bomes utilizes acrylic pouring techniques that provide a sense of relaxation and creativity.
  • George Gillard adopts traditional brushwork with acrylics, often portraying subjects related to his military background.
  • Ernest Lawson combines mixed media, blending fine art with digital images to convey powerful messages through his posters.

This exhibit was curated by Barrie Foster, who has dedicated three years to teaching art at the VA Hospital in Memphis, and reflects her commitment to supporting veteran artists. Foster previously served as the Director of the Tipton County Museum, Veterans Memorial, and Nature Center, where she established the Veteran of the Month program.

All paintings on display will be available for purchase. For more information about the event or to inquire about purchasing a piece, please contact Barrie Foster at 901-212-7890.
