Dyersburg State Community College is thrilled to announce the appointment of Steve Cornelison as the new Athletic Director. With over twenty-eight years of experience in college athletics, Cornelison brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the role. Mr. Cornelison began his role on Friday, March 1.
Prior to joining Dyersburg State Community College, Cornelison served as the Athletic Director at Jackson State Community College from July 2001 to February 2024. During his tenure, he made significant contributions to the athletic department, including hiring full-time head coaches for softball and women’s basketball, adding an on-campus softball facility, and extensive renovations to the gym, locker rooms, and fitness center. Furthermore, Cornelison implemented community service and drug education programs for all teams, emphasizing total student-athlete development.
Cornelison’s dedication to student athletes’ success is evident in the department’s achievements under his leadership. Teams under his direction consistently ranked above the state and national average in retention, graduation rates, and transfer to four-year institutions. His commitment to excellence has created a culture of success and growth within the athletic program.
In addition to his role as an Athletic Director, Cornelison boasts an impressive baseball coaching career, with over 400 career wins before his retirement in 2012. He has mentored numerous student-athletes who have earned conference, region, and NJCAA athletic and academic awards, highlighting his commitment to athletic and academic achievement.
Cornelison’s athletic background includes playing baseball at Jackson State Community College and Austin Peay State University. His firsthand experience as a student-athlete informs his approach to developing well-rounded individuals in college athletics.
