On September 17, 2024, Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC) proudly hosted a celebration of Constitution Day, accompanied by the induction of the new Student Government Association (SGA) officers for the academic year. The event occurred at the Jimmy Naifeh Center in the Learning Resource Center.
The ceremony was opened by Larenda Fultz, Dean of Student Services, who warmly welcomed all attendees. Ret. Col. Alfred J. “Jason” Fleming, Chief of Staff for the Covington Mayor’s Office, served as the keynote speaker for the event. With his rich military service background and current role as Chief of Staff at the Covington Mayor’s Office, Col. Fleming implored the importance of leadership and all that leadership entails from his perspective. Col. Fleming resonated with the audience with his insightful remarks on the Constitution’s enduring impact and the civic responsibilities it involves.
Col. Fleming’s installation and oath of office for the newly elected SGA officers highlighted the event. The DSCC community welcomed President Nathaniel Burnett, Dyersburg Vice President Alana Seals, and JNC Vice President Callie McDonald as they stepped into their leadership roles, ready to positively impact the DSCC student body.
Underlining the importance of this event, Dean of Student Services Larenda Fultz stated, “It was an honor to have the mayoral chief of staff, Jason Fleming, join us for our annual Constitution Day observance. He shared an inspiring message about the importance of civic engagement as our Student Government Association leaders begin their tenure leading the student body of DSCC.”
Hannah Yawn, Coordinator of Student Life, shared closing remarks that celebrated the successful induction of the SGA officers and the shared commitment to civic engagement. The Constitution Day and SGA Officer Induction event commemorated a pivotal moment in American history and showcased the vibrant student leadership within Dyersburg State Community College. It was an evening of inspiration, reflection, and celebration, marking yet another chapter in DSCC’s commitment to fostering leadership and civic responsibility among its students.
