With some experience, many professionals can work from home, providing more job opportunities. The HIM Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree or concentration programs have admission, retention and graduation requirements which students must review and understand.
Health Information Management Mission:
In concert with the mission statement of Dyersburg State Community College, the Health Information Management Program at Dyersburg State Community College enables students to improve their educational attainment through completion of the Associate of Applied Science degree in Health Information Management. This degree provides students with the technical skills of collection, analysis, and use of health information, which are essential to the health care industry. Attainment of the degree also prepares students to obtain RHIT certification.
In addition, the Health Information Management Program offers students opportunities for employment as highly-respected and skilled allied health professionals who contribute to quality care without having direct patient contact. Employment opportunities are found in hospital health information departments, clinics, surgery centers, health maintenance organizations (HMOs), home health agencies, hospices, hospital computer vendors, private industry, and other health-related agencies.
If you want to work in the healthcare field with limited interaction with patients, the Health Information Management (HIM) Program provides you with three great options:
REGISTERED HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNICIAN (RHIT)
- Ensure the quality of medical records
- Use computer applications to assemble and analyze patient data
- Specialize in:
- Coding a patient’s diagnoses and procedures for reimbursement and research
- OR registering cancer patients by compiling and maintaining relevant data for them
Starting salaries: Registered Health Information Management Technician: $20.53 – $31.20 per hour

ELECTRONIC HEALTH RECORD TECHNICAL CERTIFICATE
- Use software programs to store and retrieve health records

The Health Information Management accreditor of Dyersburg State Community College is the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).
